Chronic Illness Therapy

I believe that we are made up of parts that work together and affect one another. When any part (Emotional, Physical, Spiritual, Mental) of ourselves is wounded, it causes pain in the other parts. Having a chronic illness doesn’t just affect your physical parts, but also your emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Autoimmune disorders, chronic pain, and other chronic illnesses are on the rise in our country and around the world. They affect us and our lives in more than one way.

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), 6 in 10 adults currently have a chronic disease; and 4 in 10 adults have two or more chronic illnesses. The NIH (National Institutes of Health) reports that there are currently more than 24 million people in the United States with an autoimmune illness.

Many of us don’t yet have a formal diagnosis, but we know that something isn’t quite right. Some of us have a diagnosis, and are struggling to accept and cope with that diagnosis. It can take years to find your way to a medical practitioner that finds the clue to diagnose your illness.

Sometimes, because diagnoses such as Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia are relatively new, people struggle with getting others to accept the legitimacy of their symptoms. This is hurtful, and can even be traumatizing when friends, employers, and family don’t understand.

We will address the thoughts, feelings & behaviors as well as the social and spiritual aspects of chronic illness. Through a focus on self-care, healing, understanding the past, and making sense of what is happening in the present, I offer support through teaching communication strategies and strengths based coping skills.  I strongly believe in clients taking an active role in their own pain and treatment.

I can help you learn to manage the stress of your symptoms, the disappointments of how your symptoms affect your relationships, and together we can find solutions to creating happiness again.
